Peter Mallet The Artist's Photographer

Peter Mallet shot by James White

"Peter Mallet has photographed my work since 2017. I have complete trust in his ability to capture the right photo for my works – whether in terms of colour, lighting, texture, or the detail of cutting out the edges. He understands the setup of the studio, works within its limitations, then creates photographs that capture both the atmosphere and the spirit of the work.

I am particularly grateful to him for documenting all twenty of my works for the Hayward Gallery's Everyday Heroes project, thirteen of which were enlarged to billboard-sized prints around the Southbank Centre. His approach to sizing and preparing these was meticulous, and I had total confidence that his images would translate well at scale.

He has taken my portrait twice in the studio – each time the shot was right for the theme of the work and the paintings around me. His series of artists' portraits takes you in to their workspaces and gives you a strong sense of their practice and personality. "

Over 15 years in the London art scene has given Peter an unparalleled knowledge of the photographic requirements of artists, galleries, institutions and collectors. His ability to capture every different medium of art work in a diverse range of sites, as well as complex art installations demonstrates technical virtuosity and skill, built up over years of practical experience. From the metallic designs of Thomas Heatherwick, to oil paintings by Hugo Wilson, large scale room installations by Chiharu Shiota, to neons and video pieces, he's able to build sets, use his intimate knowledge of photographic technology, and create the perfect imagery that suits all the stakeholder's needs. He delivers the highest quality images, ensuring consistency when creating publications and archives of work, and enjoys a collaborative and flexible approach to the creative process.

Born in Dublin, Peter moved to London in 1992 to study a B.A. in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. After graduating he travelled in Europe, South America and Asia building a portfolio of photography, and on return to London he started working as a colour printer in Primary Colour, a high end photographic lab in London and also assisting many of London's top commercial photographers.

In 2004 an image of a Mexican street photographer helped launch his career, getting his first commission with the Sunday Times Travel magazine, a partnership which lasted ten years. Other clients include Wanderlust, Geographical, Harrods, Coast magazines, Visit England and Odyssey Marine Exploration.

Peter's interest in people and locations continues with his ever growing portfolio of artist portraits. The images of a whole host of artists working today, from major names to young and emerging, is a fascinating snapshot into their minds, workplaces and practices. In 2014 Peter met Caroline Walker and started to visit her studio regularly documenting and set building in her space.

"I loved being in the studio environment working directly with the Artist getting a greater understanding of the work and the best ways to document it. I have found this collaboration the most rewarding experience."

Alongside this personal photographic project, Peter has been documenting exhibitions for galleries, with each presenting a host of different challenges.

"I just love working with art and trying to overcome the technical difficulties that come with producing good reproductions".
